plant pictureEarly Day Motion on Seed Sovereignty

Dianne Abbott MP has tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) on Seed Sovereignty.

In the way of such things, it covers a lot of ground in each sentence, but the main point is that access to seed resources is central to small-scale farmers' ability to maintain resilient and productive livelihoods.

It also calls on the Government and the Department for International Development to support local seed initiatives, and to stop linking overseas aid to seed policy 'reforms' that aid corporate control of the seed supply.

So far, 68 MPs have registered their support of the motion - if you think it's a good idea, why not write to your MP and urge them to sign up.

We've written a draft letter below that may be helpful. You can find your MP's email address by putting in your postcode at Writetothem.com

Dear ______

Re:  Early Day Motion 466 (Seed Sovereignty)

I am writing to encourage you to support the Early Day motion above.

Access to locally produced and adapted seed which does not require expensive bought inputs for reliable production is vital for small scale farmers and growers both in this country and elsewhere.

In addition, any further narrowing of the world seed supply also reduces the genetic diversity of our seed stock, and will reduce the resilience of agriculture in the face of future shocks, both from the effects of climate change and also the emergence of new pests and diseases.

With thanks for your time,

Yours sincerely
